Everyone knows we are experiencing a double epidemic of chronic pain and opioid addiction in the United States. The Healing Place Team is committed to making a difference.
Because A Healing Place offers a closed Triple Diagnosis program—people enter, go through and transition as a group or cohort—with Dale Ryder’s assistance we were able to design a developmental curriculum with each session building to the next; you can’t do that in an open ended program. Our patients were exposed to not only cognitive behavioral restructuring interventions but also a multitude of skill building and experiential modalities.
This first cohort group bonded quickly and became each other’s “Accountability Partners.” At each evenings session the patients developed a call to action, or homework, assignment and asked each other to help hold them accountable to completing it. All of the women in the cohort had suffered from severe social isolation so it was amazing when they started self-scheduling social events on weekends or between sessions. They became a beautiful bonded band of sisters.

A lot of changes have happened in the past six months. In June we closed our Consulting and Training Business in Sacramento and moved to Camarillo California to open a Triple Diagnosis Chronic Pain Management Program we named A Healing Place - The Estates. Wishing You A Happy Gratitude Week – AKA Thanksgiving Week

Today being Gratitude Week (aka Thanksgiving Week) I wanted to cover my most favorite topic—gratitude. This year my big gratitude is being able to start a new Functional Restoration Chronic Pain Management Program - A Healing Place - The Estates in Camarillo California. Many years ago I learned the value of showing up as a contribution instead of a complaint. Please watch my video below and then read the remainder of this post.
When life gets rough many of us start complaining; at least I know I do. One day I was going on and on to a good friend of mine who, after listening for a while, asked me if I would be willing to make a list of all the things in my life I was grateful for instead of just complaining.
This was especially true for my chronic pain conditions. I was very surprised as I went through this exercise and had about 50 things I was grateful for. I thought it was a great list. My friend didn’t. He asked me to triple that list. At first I couldn’t understand how I could find that many things to be grateful for, but with his support and coaching I finally did it.
I was amazed that the problems I had been complaining about no longer seemed so bad. He even gave me a bumper sticker that said “Attitude of Gratitude.” That really helped me make peace with my pain and even at times be grateful for my pain—and no I’m not a masochist.
Because it’s Gratitude Week, I want to share with you my Attitude of Gratitude mission. For the past 36 years the word gratitude has taken on a different meaning than it had for me up until that point. In my healing recovery process I learned that an attitude of gratitude could shift me from anger, fear, guilt, shame, loneliness, hopelessness or any other uncomfortable emotional state into a state of hope and excitement.
Since 1981 I have seen November as Gratitude Month and the week of Thanksgiving as Gratitude Week and Thanksgiving Day as GRATITUDE DAY. So, during this Gratitude Week I once again sat down and made a long list of everything I’m grateful for in my life. This took quite a while as I do have so much to be grateful for.
What I am most grateful for today is my recovery of almost 36 years and my relationship with Ellen, my wife and partner of over 28 years. I make it a point to tell her everyday how grateful I am for her. Many times she laughingly asks: why am I grateful? When she asked me that question it’s easy to put together my "short list" of 25 reasons I am grateful for. I say short list because there are not enough words to express how grateful I am that Ellen is in my life.
I want to share a story that my Karate Sensei (Teacher) Richard Kim would tell us when we seemed upset or down. He said that when something bad happens say "Thank you adversity for yet another test. If you break a toe, be grateful it wasn’t your foot. If you break your foot, be grateful that it wasn’t your leg. If you break your leg, be grateful you didn’t die. And if you die, be grateful that you don’t have to finish the rest of this grueling class with me."
So today when life happens I need to remember to say thank you for yet another test and learn from it. One of the most challenging life events for me this past decade was a bit over eight years ago (September 29, 2007) when my father died. As I came out of the shock/denial of his death I had a hard time finding anything to be grateful for around that. Fortunately, I have many recovery support people in my life and I started to get into a lot of gratitude for the time I had with my father; especially the last seven years of his life when we became so much closer.
It was right after Christmas and Ellen was in Chicago with her family and I was really grieving dad’s death. I then decided to go through all my gratitude lists for that year and before I was half way through the year my attitude shifted. Many of my early gratitude list items were about different things I was grateful for in my relationship with Dad.
So again this year I’m wishing you all a Happy Gratitude Day (AKA Thanksgiving Day) and hope you can find many things to be grateful for today. No matter what you are experiencing; work hard to acknowledge what you are grateful for. An attitude of gratitude can turn a dismal day into the best day of your life if you let it.
It is impossible to be in gratitude and suffer at the same time — the choice is yours!

Seeing Chronic Pain Flare Ups As Learning Opportunities

Whenever I experience pain, I find it very helpful to ask: “What is my pain trying to tell me?” I believe that pain is trying to tell me that something is wrong and that I had better find out what exactly is wrong and find a way to fix it. Today I want to see my pain flare ups as learning opportunities. Please check out my video blog below and then read the remainder of this post.
To understand the language of pain, I first must understand how the pain echoes and reverberates between my physical, psychological, and social dimensions of my life. Pain is truly a total human experience that affects all aspects of human functioning.
When it comes to my pain management, knowledge is power. Once I know what is really going on with my body and mind I can start to take action to effectively manage my pain. In fact, I’ve found that it’s crucial to stop believing pain is my enemy and embrace it as my friend. I know this is easier said than done. Many people I’ve shared this with have looked at me like I’m crazy when I tell them that if they want to have the kind of relief that I’ve learned to have they must make peace with their pain and that pain is their friend. They tell me—very strongly in some cases—that they can’t buy it, but nevertheless it is true.
My Three Most Important Action Steps
1. Stop Believing Pain Is My Enemy!
2. Make Peace With My Pain!
3. Start Embracing Pain As My Friend!
I have been living with my own chronic pain condition for over thirty two years now. I still have periodic episodes of pain flare ups where I need to put into practice all that I’ve learned. Like everyone living with a chronic pain condition some days are better than others, but even on the bad days, one thing is certain – pain does not control my life.
This peacemaking was something I had to resolve for myself early on in my own chronic pain management journey. I always ask people suffering with chronic pain this question – are you willing to make peace with your pain or do you want to continue to suffer?
In essence what I’m asking them is: are you willing to do what is necessary to make pain your friend and move on with your life? As you might imagine and perhaps you’re thinking this yourself, they looked at me like I’ve lost my mind and have told me so in no uncertain terms! Nevertheless the question opened the door for a deeper level of healing to begin.
When I was willing to consider that my pain could be more of an ally than an enemy, the next step to developing an effective chronic pain management plan was to learn all I could about my pain and how to intervene in an appropriate way that continually improves the quality of my life.
Below are just some of the non-medication based pain flare up activities I use or have used over the past 32 years—though not at the same time and not necessarily in this order.
Meditation And Relaxation Emotional Management Massage Therapy Physical Therapy Chiropractic Treatment Acupuncture Biofeedback, Hypnosis Yoga/Tai Chi Diet/Nutrition Prayer Sweat Lodges Self-Help Groups TENS Units, Rolfing/Hellar Sleep Hygiene Music Swimming Hydrotherapy Pain Journaling Art Therapy, Acupressure, Ice / Heat Guided Imagery
There are many more choices out there including safe and effective medication and medical interventions. Find what’s right for you. Make a list of three or four of these you are willing to learn how to effectively implement and find a couple of accountability partners to help you.

Last week I presented at the 43rd Annual Kentucky School on Alcohol and Other Drug Studies. This year I presented day long for three days. On the first day I presented a new topic for this school Relapse Prevention For Eating Addiction. On the second day I was asked to present Medication Dilemmas in Recovery. And on the third day back by popular demand Taking The Mystery Out Of Relapse based on the Gorski-CENAPS® Relapse Prevention Model. Please watch my Video Blog and then read on about the school.
The 43rd Annual Kentucky School of Alcohol and Other Drug Studies, was held July 17-21, 2016, and it was their largest event ever with over 800 participants registered and over 100 last minute walk-ins. This years participants enjoyed the new speakers and topics, as well as some favorites from years past, and the resources, services, programs and products available at the Exhibit Hall.
They are looking forward to next year. So mark your calendars now for the 44th annual Kentucky School for Alcohol and Other Drug Studies, tentatively scheduled for July 23-27, 2017, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.

In this day of relapse prevention planning my participants learned how to identify and manage self-defeating ways of thinking that could justify a relapse.
Together we explored how to Identify and Manage Self-Defeating Ways of Thinking that often justify a relapse. Sometimes these are referred to as The Inner Saboteur, Monkey Mind, or The Committee in the Head. Most often we just call it Denial. A return to denial is just the beginning of a potential relapse. The relapse cycle often starts when people cut back or stop doing what helped them get clean and sober in the first place—they stop growing!
